Chinese zodiac compatibility
Every pair of the twelve animals, scored by the traditional relations between their branches: the four trines, the six secret-friend pairs, the six clashes, the harms and the punishments. Pick two animals in the chart.
★★★★★ trine or secret friend · ★★★★ same sign · ★★★ no special relation · ★★ harm or punishment · ★ clash
The rules behind the chart
Trines (三合). The twelve branches form four triangles of signs four places apart: Rat, Dragon and Monkey; Ox, Snake and Rooster; Tiger, Horse and Dog; Rabbit, Goat and Pig. Signs in one triangle are the classic best matches.
Secret friends (六合). Six pairs whose branches combine: Rat and Ox, Tiger and Pig, Rabbit and Dog, Dragon and Rooster, Snake and Monkey, Horse and Goat. A quieter, protective bond.
Clashes (相冲). Signs directly opposite each other, six places apart: Rat and Horse, Ox and Goat, Tiger and Monkey, Rabbit and Rooster, Dragon and Dog, Snake and Pig. The pairs the almanacs caution about.
Harms and punishments (相害, 相刑). Milder frictions: Rat and Goat, Ox and Horse, Tiger and Snake, Rabbit and Dragon, Monkey and Pig, Rooster and Dog harm each other; Rat and Rabbit, the Ox–Goat–Dog triangle and the Tiger–Snake–Monkey triangle punish; Dragon, Horse, Rooster and Pig punish their own sign.
These are the relations used in traditional matchmaking (合婚) for centuries. We present them as culture, not prediction.
