The Pig in Chinese culture
Character
Generous, easy-going and sincere. The Pig closes the cycle with abundance; it is the sign of enjoying what has been earned.
Closest companions in the cycle: the Rabbit and the Goat, the two animals that share the Pig's trine. Its secret friend is the Tiger.
A story
A pig under a roof is the character 家, home: a household was counted complete when it kept one.
Element changes the flavour of each Pig year. Metal 金: resolve and clarity: the edge of a blade, the ring of a bell. Wood 木: growth and flexibility: spring, bamboo, new shoots. Water 水: adaptability and depth: rivers finding their way. Fire 火: warmth and drive: summer, lanterns, the hearth. Earth 土: steadiness and care: harvest, soil, the centre.
