Chinese name generator

Type your name and you get three Chinese names a Chinese person would hear as real, not a transliteration. Each one is a one-character family name chosen from the sound of your surname, followed by a given name of one or two characters, with the pinyin and meaning of every character. It is free, there is no account, and you can ask for three more.

How it works

  1. Enter your first and last name. Add who the name is for or what it should mean, if you like.

  2. Read the three candidates: the meaning of each character, and why the name fits.

  3. Choose one. The first piece of calligraphy is written for you free; the rest of a collection is a one-time purchase.

Questions

How is this different from other Chinese name generators?

Most generators pick syllables that sound like your name (艾米丽·沃森 for Emily Watson), which Chinese readers see as "a foreigner". We follow the shape of a real Chinese name: a surname from the Hundred Family Surnames, then one or two meaningful characters, filtered for bad homophones and characters that read as words.

Is the Chinese name generator free?

Yes. Finding a name, the meanings and three more candidates are free. Only the artwork (calligraphy, seals, the tattoo pack) costs money.

Can I choose a name for a girl or a boy?

Yes. Open "More about the name" and pick who it is for; the characters change accordingly. You can also say what the name should carry: the sea, patience, a grandmother’s name.

Is the name checked by a person?

Candidates are proposed by a language model within our rules. Anything we sell as a tattoo design or certificate of meaning is also read by a native Mandarin speaker, who signs the certificate.
